I’m so glad you’re considering electrolysis and taking this step toward feeling more comfortable and confident in your skin. Your first visit is all about making sure you feel informed, relaxed, and supported. This page will walk you through everything you need to know before you arrive — from how to prepare, to what to expect during your test patch, to how your skin may respond afterward. My goal is to make your experience as smooth and comfortable as possible, and to help you get the best results right from the start.
Come with clean, product‑free skin
If possible, please arrive with the treatment area freshly washed and free of:
-
makeup
-
lotions or oils
-
deodorant (for underarms)
-
sunscreen
Clean skin helps the treatment work more effectively and reduces irritation.
Avoid caffeine for 2–3 hours beforehand
Caffeine can make your skin more sensitive. Skipping coffee or energy drinks right before your appointment can make the treatment feel more comfortable.
Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of your appointment. Well‑hydrated skin responds better and can make the treatment feel gentler.
Avoid retinol, acids, and exfoliants
For 48 hours before your appointment, avoid:
-
retinol or retinoids
-
AHAs/BHAs (glycolic, salicylic acid)
-
scrubs or exfoliating brushes
-
chemical peels
These products increase skin sensitivity.
Avoid sun exposure
Please avoid:
-
tanning beds
-
sunbathing
-
sunburns
Electrolysis cannot be performed on sunburned or freshly tanned skin.
Let the hair grow
For electrolysis to work, the hair must be long enough to grasp with tweezers.
-
Ideally: 2–3 mm of growth
-
Avoid waxing, sugaring, or threading for at least 4 weeks
-
Shaving is okay — just stop 2–3 days before your appointment
Visible growth is important for effective treatment.
Pain Management Options
Everyone experiences electrolysis differently — some areas are more sensitive than others. If you’re concerned about discomfort, here are some options:
Topical numbing cream
You may apply an over‑the‑counter numbing cream (such as one containing lidocaine) 30–60 minutes before your appointment. Apply a thin layer, cover with plastic wrap, and remove before arriving.
Tylenol or Advil
You may take Tylenol or Advil 30 minutes before your appointment if you typically use these medications and they are safe for you. (Always follow the instructions on the label and your healthcare provider’s guidance.)
Breaks are always okay
We can pause anytime — your comfort is always the priority.
What to Expect During Your Appointment
Electrolysis feels different for everyone — most clients describe it as a quick, warm “zap” or a tiny pinch. You’re always in control, and I’ll check in with you throughout.
During your first visit, we will:
-
review your health history
-
discuss your goals
-
create a treatment plan
-
do a 5–10 minute test patch so you can experience the sensation and see how your skin responds
This helps us tailor your treatment and ensures you feel confident moving forward.
What to Expect After Your Appointment
It’s completely normal to experience:
-
mild redness
-
slight swelling
-
tiny pinpoint scabbing (especially on sensitive areas)
These reactions are temporary and usually fade within a few hours to a couple of days.
Aftercare Essentials
To help your skin heal beautifully:
-
Apply aloe vera or witch hazel as needed
-
Avoid touching or picking the area
-
Avoid makeup, deodorant, exfoliation, hot tubs, saunas, and intense exercise for 24–48 hours
-
Avoid sun exposure and use SPF once the skin has calmed
-
Keep the area clean and dry
If you ever have questions or notice anything unusual, I’m always here to help.
